TMJ Treatment

Dentistry is not just about teeth. The mouth involves a complex system of bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, and nerves that work in harmony to create a comfortable bite. If any part of this system malfunctions, the result may be headaches, facial pain, jaw pain, tooth wear, or other symptoms. TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder) is a common dental problem that causes 10 million Americans chronic pain.

The precise cause of TMJ is unknown, but contributing factors are thought to include stress, injury, infection, and auto-immune disease. For most patients, Dr. Calvano and Dr. La Grua relieve TMJ-related pain with a custom-fitted mouthguard.

A TMJ mouthguard works by holding your jaw in a more comfortable position. Dr. Calvano and Dr. La Grua will examine your teeth, head, and neck to determine your jaw's proper alignment. Then, they take impressions and send them to a dental lab where technicians fabricate a custom mouthguard. The mouthguard will gradually realign your jaw, allowing your joints and muscles to move without stress or discomfort.

Other TMJ therapies may include facial relaxation exercises or tooth reshaping.
