Root Canals
Does the term root canal send shivers down your spine? Public hostility toward root canals is nothing new. In fact, it can be traced back to the 1900's when root canal therapy was first performed. Today, we have modern tools, methods, and knowledge that allow us to perform root canals quickly and comfortably.
What is a root canal?
A root canal is the inner chamber of the tooth that houses the pulp--a nourishing system of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues. The pulp is vital when the tooth is first growing, but once a tooth has reached full maturity, it can survive without the pulp.
Root canal therapy is necessary when the pulp is damaged due to trauma or a large cavity. If left untreated, the infection will spread to the tooth's nerve, and the tooth will have to be extracted. To perform a root canal, Dr. Calvano or Dr. La Grua will clean out the diseased pulp, fill the chamber with an inert substance, and seal the tooth to prevent infection.
Is root canal therapy painful?
Contrary to popular misconceptions, root canal therapy does NOT cause pain; it relieves pain. The infected pulp causes painful pressure and swelling. Once the pulp is removed, the pain subsides.
With modern tools and methods, Dr. Calvano and Dr. La Grua can perform root canal therapy in a single office visit. The result will be a perfectly restored, natural tooth that will last you years and years.
