Porcelain Crowns
Sometimes a filling, inlay, or onlay isn't enough to restore a tooth's function. Crowns fit over teeth like a thimble on a finger and protect them from cracks, breaks, and infection. In the past, metal was thought to be the only material able to withstand biting forces. Porcelain crowns have proven durable and esthetically pleasing.
What is a crown?
A dental crown, also called a cap, encases an entire tooth. Crowns protect damaged teeth, add structure to worn teeth, and mask stains or misalignments. To place a crown, Dr. Calvano or Dr. La Grua will first assess your bite. They may take impressions, X-rays, or digital images of your mouth. Then, they send all of the information collected to a dental lab, where a custom crown is designed to blend seamlessly with your existing teeth.
How long will my crowns last?
The life of your crown depends on a variety of factors including location, oral hygiene, and dietary habits. Typically, a crown will last from 5 to 8 years, though with good oral hygiene and regular checkups, they can last much longer. If you grind your teeth, bite your nails, or chew ice, you could damage your crown.
