Periodontal Treatment
Stop Gum Disease Before it Stops You!
Gum disease is responsible for up to 70% of adult tooth loss. Gum disease does not give clear warning signs that an untrained eye would notice. A dentist or hygienist must do a thorough and complete examination to detect it, especially in the early stages. Gum disease is similar to high blood pressure or heart disease– by the time patients notice symptoms, it is in an advanced stage.
Recent studies have linked gum disease to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-mature births, and low birth weight. Gum disease is an infection of the gums and jawbones. The bacteria and chemical byproducts that the body uses to fight these bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause serious problems in distant parts of the body.
The good news is that targeted care can help prevent gum disease. We take an aggressive and proactive approach to gum disease through soft-tissue management. This means that we do everything possible to reduce the bacteria and prevent it from spreading.
If we find that you have gum disease, we can help reverse your symptoms with non-surgical periodontal treatment. Although there is currently no cure for gum disease, treatment will prevent the disease from causing tooth loss and advancing to a stage that may cause life-threatening illnesses.
Our periodontal treatments include:
- Scaling. Plaque that forms below the gum line creates deep pockets in which bacteria collect. With this treatment, we remove the hardened plaque to promote gum reattachment.
- Root Planing. Bacteria stick to rough surfaces on tooth roots. Root planing involves smoothing the tooth roots to prevent bacteria from sticking.
- Antibiotics. Our antibacterial mouth rinse fights bacteria for up to 30 days.
If we feel that you would benefit from periodontal treatment with a periodontist (gum specialist), we will refer you to a trusted colleague. You cannot experience total oral health with diseased gums. We will do whatever it takes to set you back on the path to total oral health and wellness.
